Stewart Lee storms the Komedia Studio

Stewart Lee hadn’t been in the Komedia Studio for 20 years, since he’d produced the Mighty Boosh. We could have sold the tickets ten times over – they sold out in minutes – but we’d decided to keep the show in the 80-seat Studio so that we could give our Charity Chuckle regulars and true comedy fans a small, intimate, brilliant gig to remember.

And so it was. Zoe Lyons, Jim Holland and compere Julie Jepson entertained, thrilled and charmed the packed crowd. It would have been more than enough. But this night we were also treated to 55 minutes of new and newish stuff from Stewart Lee, and what stonking stuff it was too! He appeared to be enjoying it as much as we were, feeding off the reactions of an audience that was – well, very Brighton.

Everyone went home happy – so happy that we were congratulated in the street in the following days. The comedians got to try out their Works in Progress; local charity, FareShare, collected the dried food, tins and a whole Lidl bag full of shopping that the audience had generously donated, as well as over £450 in money raised; Jim and Julie got to appear on a bill with their comedy heroes; and I watched an amazing, hilarious night of top-notch and topical comedy for free, plus I got my Charity Chuckle poster signed.

Loved it. Thank you to Zoe, Stew, Jim and Julie for a truly great night, and the audience for being there. We can’t do live comedy and support local charities without you. And if you missed, well, there’s always Edinburgh!
